Tourism in the European Union has reached a new record in 2014. The number of nights spent in hotels, lodges, guesthouses and other campsites in 28 Member States peaked at around 2.7 billion, up 1 7% from 2013, according to Eurostat calculations released this week. With 402.9 million overnight stays, France holds on to its first place of tourist destinations, whether for business or leisure stays. But only just. While attendance at tourist accommodation fell 1.2% last year, the Hexagon is closely followed by Spain and its 401.3 million overnight stays (+ 3.1% in one year). Italy (-1.8% to 369.9 million overnight stays) and Germany (+ 2.9% to 366.2 million) in the following charts.

The year 2015 is a challenge for destination France. Especially since she has started badly for Parisian hotel, which experienced an unusual drop in attendance in January after the attack against Charlie Hebdo. However, the Paris region weighed 34.1% attendance of tourist accommodation in France in 2013, according to the latest Memento Tourism published by the Government. Far ahead of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (10.9%), the Rhône-Alpes region (9.3%), Aquitaine (4.4%) and the Midi-Pyrénées region (4.1% ).
