The Pyrenees ski resorts are indebted

The Court of Auditors paints a disturbing picture of the financial position of the Pyrenees ski resorts.

The Court of Auditors is concerned about the "settlement" of the activity of the Pyrenees ski resorts, and advocates a rapprochement areas and diversification.

In this report, "The Future of the Pyrenees ski resorts: a necessary remedy, the inevitable choice," released Wednesday, the Court emphasized the high level of indebtedness of the Pyrenean stations, which "regularly reaches 300% or 400% turnover ".

The Court also mentioned the dilapidated facilities and a decline in investment in recent years (800,000 euros in 2013, against 13 million euros in 2010).

Several seasons "very difficult"

The difficulties are due to several seasons "very difficult" and "randomness of snow" suffered by the Pyrenean mountains because of their lower elevation and climate change.

But the Court advance other explanations for the deterioration of the financial situation of the stations: a difficult road access, no "total" service to the slopes and an average price of inadequate packages.

To remedy the situation and allow the stations to acquire modern equipment needed, the Court offers three tracks: the pooling of trade policy between the stations, the professionalization of management resources and the development of sports activities other than downhill skiing.
Two-thirds of the stations have a turnover of less than € 5

The Court concluded that public support via local authorities (councils and inter-communities in particular) must be "now reserved" to ski resorts capable of ensuring their operating balance.

French Pyrenees count thirty stations, two thirds of which recorded a turnover of less than 5 million.
